For a while, I had been fascinated by an internet innovation – vegan spread, until I finally decided to try it to find out why there was so much hype about it. 🙈 And you know what? This bean wonder really tastes like traditional lard!! 👌 And its preparation literally takes only 10-15 minutes!
I added an sour apples, which I first sautéed in a pan along with onions, garlic, and spices, creating the effect of aromatic “bacon.”
This spread tastes truly excellent on a slice of fresh bread with pickled cucumber slices. Unlike traditional lard (which, of course, cannot be replaced), it’s healthy, not as fattening, and you can definitely enjoy more of it! What more could you ask for? 😋

Ingredients
2 cups cooked white beans or drained canned beans (for a quicker version)
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1.5 onions
3 bay leaves
6 allspice berries
1.5 teaspoons dried marjoram
1 medium tart apple
2 cloves of garlic
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
.
Directions
- Mash the beans with salt, leaving some bean pieces for texture; don’t puree them into a completely smooth paste as it enhances the schmaltz.
- Heat the oil in a pan and add finely diced onions, bay leaves, allspice, and marjoram, stir and sauté for about 1 minute.
- Add the diced apple, crushed garlic, and pepper, stir, and sauté until it’s lightly browned. Remove the pan from the heat and discard the bay leaves and allspice; they are no longer needed.
- Add the sautéed onions, apple, and spices to the mashed beans, mix well, transfer the schmaltz into a jar, and let it cool in the refrigerator, preferably overnight.
Enjoy!
